Guys...meet Matilda

Post  Cameron on Sat 07 Sep 2013, 6:11 pm

So here she is. My restoration project.
I picked her up last weekend and the excitement is growing.

1969 Volvo P1800s

She has some rust, mainly in the rear. The front half seems fine.
So first off the wiring loom will be stripped out and inspected. Then the rest of the interior will be taken out and all the chrome trims will be removed. Then ill cut out the rust and prime it, so she can sit there for 12 months with no further body work and she wont turn into dust.

Ill keep you posted with all updates.

That's ace Cam! What's your plans with Matilda? Full resto? Just get it on the road and enjoy it? Original engine, or something more modern?

Ok so the plans at the moment (they will probably change)
I will carry out a full restoration to original condition. She will remain red, with black leather interior. Standard 2.0l engine, which i will rebuild.
Will probably be a 4 year project, but we shall see how things go.

If anybody has any restoration experience, im open to any and all suggestions. Ive never done anything like this before.

Depending on your skills, look up your local Tafe college. Panel beating/ spray painting courses are great. Join a club, lots of good info there. Get your mates to pitch in with skills and/or Labour. If you're looking for "professionals" to do any work, go with "recommendations" from others. Oh, and stick to your plans, and allow double.........time and funds!

You lucky B_____  Cam.  Love it.  That will be a real head turner when it is done.  I have an older friend here on the island who does restores. He was working on his daughters Torana for years. A lot of hand made custom bits and it looks absolutely stunning. He dropped a late model fuel injected V8 in it.  He even made " One Off " tail lights.  Had the lenses moulded specially for them. Customised interior. His daughter is in a car club and is putting the finishing touches to it now.     Best of luck.

ps.  Get yourself into a Volvo Car Club.   If your not already.

Update:
Labelled and pulled out wiring harness. Its a pretty basic harness, so i will probably make my own new harness. This one is old with many broken wires and additional wiring for stuff like aftermarket speakers which wont be going back in. So ill make a new one.

Removed the rest of the chrome trims from the rear wings and doors. Removed all the glass and stripped the doors of window mechanisms, door handles, door trims, and locks.
Progress is being made.
This week i will get the engine ready to just lift straight out. For the next few weeks, as its a shared workshop, i wont be able to pull the engine out or do any work requiring the hoist. So ill probably get started on the wiring harness and go though and clean all my spare parts to figure out what needs to be replaced.

Total time spent on restoration: 8 hours.

Nope. Im going to sand it all back myself. I know it will take much longer, but will save a few $$ and i know all the work has been done by me. So in a few years when i stand back and took at her, i know all the hard work thats been put in.

Looks like a fun project. Can you keep posting progress photos.

I don't know if you have many rusty items, however if you do I can highly recommend Evapo-Rust. This stuff really works. The link below if for the Australian distributor. The reason I know it works is because the 20,000 lts tank you see in the photos on their website is in our workshop. We have dipped whole cars in the stuff. It is really good for things like fuel tank internals. It is reusable, environmentally safe, non acidic.

We then coat the items with Prolan to prevent any new rust until it is time to repaint etc.

Now before anyone jumps on me for advertising, I'll be clear this is not an ad as we have no link to or with any of the suppliers outside Qld and will not see a cent out of any sales they make. Sad

Are you taking all the removable panels off Cam ?  Does Matilda ride on a Chassis or just a floor pan ?

soda blasting doesn't remove the rust though. You cant beat good old sand blasting for that. Having said that though, you've gotta be careful with sandblasters that you dont stretch the panels! I'll be watching this resto job, looks interesting. Not your average car.
If you've got any panelbeating questions, give us a PM.(I'm a panelbeater of 25 years) But not painting questions, not so knowledgeable.
