A electrifying question?
Evening all,
So I reached into the pockets and lashed out to buy a new Toyota Hilux ute. Usual story, got all the farkles but drew the line at them wanting to charge $450 to put in an additional a/c socket to the left of the existing one.
My question is - Can I just run a couple of wires from the existing socket to a new one? Distance will be about 4 inches? or am I just being a tight ass
Thoughts

I`m no sparkie, and I`m sure someone here will give you the low down on tech info, but, it depends what your running. If you were to run two fridges from what you want to do, you`ll blow a fuse due to over load. If your charging two phones, no issue.
What do you want to run?
I always do my own work, and wouldn`t pay someone to run another line.

Good point!
Just to charge the phone, lap top, safety warning device etc. Nothing with a high draw(?)drain Possibly a heated coffee mug would be the worse plugged in

Although you said you didn't like the adapter style, it is the simplist and probably the cheapest solution. Things have improved a bit from the older style that had the adapter outlet direcly in the dash socket, Jaycar sells this type of adapter for about $20:
Putting a second socket into the dash can be cumbersome, there is a fair bit of pressure on the socket pushing in and removing the plug, if you were doing that continiously just using the dash plastic to secure the socket mount it could soon break from fatigue. However if there is a blank space to mount the factory additional socket that makes it a bit easier to install.
As mentioned it should be wired back to the fuse box. The wiring is pretty simple, the outside of the cigarette socket goes to chassis earth and the centre pin to positive 12v. Depending on where in the fuse box you connect up to you can have it work only with IGN on, ACC, or always on. For tapping into the fuse box, there are these type of connectors available now, makes life a lot easier:

Those fuse box connectors look neat - I've not seen those before.
