Hmm, $310 - $130 = $180. That seems like a pretty fair price to pay for the amount of time, extertise and profesionally finished product.

I reckon if I had to do all that work I would stuff it up big time and still be shelling out for the OEM.

You must be able to source out that kind of Gel material from somewhere. And I would think that it would not be too expensive for a piece to fit into the front section of the Bandits seat.

I think using Gel is one of the worst things you can do anatomically. It actually assists in applying pressure to all the wrong places. If I learned anything as a cyclist, the harder the seat the more comfortable it was and I used to ride solo 24 hr MTB races on solid seats. Trust me I tried gel and its is worse. Training rides consisted of 300kms plus in a single ride over some fairly crappy roads and surfaces. The problem with gel is that its okay for the first hour or so, then it will be bad for you. Basically as you body (sit bones in your arse) start to disform the gel and shift it away this moves the gel to a place where it start to put pressure on your soft tissue. For men this can and will affect erectile function, for women it similarly affect their genital region.

Sit bones have a function and you need to let them perform their function, ie support your body when seated. Specialized (bicycle company) actually have a sit bone measuring tool so you can buy the correct seat for your anatomy, they also have a full BG (body geometry) range of products all developed by orthopedic specialists to maximise comfort. I call the sit bone measurer the ass-o-meter, no idea what its actually called, but you can replicate it easily. Get some closed cell foam and two marbles or ball bearings. Sit on the foam for about 30 seconds so your sit bones create an impression. Roll the balls into the depressions and them measure the distance apart. This is where you need support for sitting down for long periods on you motorbike seat. Better still create a channel or cut out down the middle to relieve pressure on the genital region.

With the right support you should be able to sit in the saddle for extended periods of time without any issue.

The other consideration you need to make is what you wear under your protective gear. Never, ever, ever, wear jocks, panties, briefs, tighty whities or whatever you want to call them. They have a seam or edge and guess where it runs? Right under your sit bone region, so you're sitting on it and its cutting in. Best thing to wear is something seamless like lycra pants that extend down to your leg so there is no seam to sit on. Even better for long days, get some cycling knicks with a chamois insert. I guarantee I can ride all day using cycling knicks and not even care less, even on the GS500 which only has a sheepskin cover over the standard seat. I know there was a thread joking about it recently (cycling knicks), I stayed silent knowing there would be derision, but it works, trust me.

It sound like you what your talking about mate!

But. I have a large lump in my right asscheek (waiting on opp) and they say & I think too, it's from sitting & bouncing on firm flat seats. Like ride on mowers, Trucks, bikes.

Maybe what you are saying is for the riding position what they call "Greyhound rooting a golf ball position". lol
where the the sportsbike type position puts more pressure that area.

This bit is from Saddleman site.

notice everyone one of those has a channel up the middle. also depends on the type and firmness of the gel, and size and shape of the bladder, much like foams, there are hard and soft varieties. its the really soft gels you have to steer clear of, they basically offer no support. and the larger the gel bladder, the more area it disperses over making you sink in more.

I also had large lumps under my sit bones, they were callouses from the time spent in the saddle. Very Happy pride an joy of any long distance cyclist. Laughing

Hammy, I've organised a ride for January (Sunshine Coast Hinterland again) and setting one up for February (Gold Coast region and into northern NSW). I don't do rides through the BRC forums anymore, they changed hands (new part owner) and the new part owner is a bit of a seat - Home made Gel seat Wonker, there's a soap opera behind the ownership structure which I won't go into on a public forum. Instead, I'm at a new forum that started as a result of some people not wanting to be part of it anymore, all the new forum is about is organised rides, nothing else, keep it simple. Assuming its okay with admin here, the forum is:

www.seqr.forumotion.com

Basically hosted by the same group that host this forum. You need to join to see the forums, but anyone is welcome on the rides.

I was thinking the same thing, it was amazing how long you could ride on the old leather bicycle saddles, once your butt was "run in". My MTB saddle presses in the wrong spot sometimes and cuts off the blood to my brain, it's a strange sensation when the feeling returns. Embarassed

Yep Brooks B17 saddle is my favourite, even though I cannot ride anymore, I have still kept it. Could ride a whole 24hr race on that thing without issue.

So I did the Saddleman Gel pad seat mod. Wasn't to hard.

I have a lump right but-cheek that makes it to painful to ride any more then 15-20 minutes Embarassed
So I've just been for a 20min ride with the Gel pad inserted in to the seat and had no pain Very Happy
So. So far, So good. The seat feels wider and softer. I rode up some real bumpy roads and man does that gel soak up the bumps and vibration.

I hopping get out for a long ride before my opp in two weeks, as I wont be back on it for 1 to 2 months. Crying or Very sad
