12,000km service
Hi,
overdue for my 12,000 service on the 1250FA so I called Peter Stevens in Adelaide - $500!!!!!
So I called Kesner - $415 !!!!!!!
What drugs are these guys on?
The only consumables are the plugs & oil.
My Audi TT only costs me $250 per year for servicing.
If it wasn't for the warranty I'd do it myself - any thoughts?????

Re: 12,000km service
I didn't even do the plugs until 24,000.
If there is nothing wrong just get a "normal" service.

No one on here has replaced a shim as far as I know.chips wrote:Shims?
Supposed to be checked at 24,000. My shop suggested I'd be wasting my money and their time (knowing the bike) and i agree. Somewhere close to 40,000 could be an option if i still have the bike.

Thanks 4wheelsagain - good thought. Must say your one word post "shims" made me laugh, Chips.
I would have used a quote but don't know how to....!
Paul gave me a call & provided me with the name of a dealer in Adelaide he has used; 12,000km service for $322 - I'll call 'em tomorrow.
Just a thought; what shims did you mean, Chips?

Just use the quote button instead of reply or whatever it says

Re: 12,000km service
Oil - Belray Semi Synth 4L $65 check
Genuine Filter $30 Check
4 x standard plugs ~$15
Total $110 + time
Your time to get the tank off, pull the plugs, cover the headers in alfoil and drop the oil and replace the filter less than 45 mins
BTW you don't need plugs or shims. I did plugs at 24K other than some slight corrosion on the plugs on the outer cylinders they were still fine. Shims were in spec.
Warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on. After 1st service cost $200 for an oil change I haven't been back. 30000kms 4+ track days, 5 back tyres, 3 fronts and it's all smiles here. I even change my own tyres

NFI = no fucking idea.....
I have a 1200s and don't know much about the newer 1250s however......
When I was looking for my new bike I really wanted a Triumph Speed Triple 1050 (circa 2005-2006)
I found one at the right price good condition blah blah BUT..... Found out that every 15,000km you have to do the SHIMS? Contacted 2 mechanics, cheapest quote was $750.00
So I got the 1200s bandit, and have never looked back, because reliability and maintenance is 2nd to none.
But I'm not sure if maintenance is different for the 1250s so I just said SHIMS to try and sound smart. And yet again i failed.
Before anyone else beats me to it. Here is a thread that may give you an idea of my mechanical knowledge.

Re: 12,000km service
The newer 1250 seems to be pretty bullet proof similar to the old 1200 (and older GSXR 1100 which it was derived from). No need to stuff about with shims until you start racking up big kms

Shims adjust the valve clearance on the newer Overhead Cam models. The 1200 uses the old screw plus locknut method.

You speak wisely, Reddog. I attempted to have Peter Stevens do something about the dreadful 'clunking' (much worse than my three previous Harley's) whenever I change up through first, second & third, right from my first service but they said it was standard on this bike & wouldn't do anything about it under warranty apart from change the oil to synthetic. However, If I was willing to PAY, they would try a new clutch!!!
I think I will do my own services - been doing it for years on my comp bikes - then just pay for the big one at 24,000km.

I like a bloke that can laugh at his mistakes - good on ya, Chips.
I also embarrassed myself publicly on this site when I asked about a 'hidden factory alarm' of any description because of an alarm sound that was happening over the course of a week - turned out to be the low battery alarm on my disk lock, stowed under the seat..
But I'm not sure if maintenance is different for the 1250s so I just said SHIMS to try and sound smart. And yet again i failed.

Because
1) I haven't heard of anyone having major dramas with these bikes.
2) I've also heard bad stories with people dealing with Suzuki Australia
3) I modified my bike within the first 6 months which means warranty is gone anyway
As for clunking through gears that is bollocks, mine doesn't clunk other than when it's cold into first gear. Try Belray semi synth and see if that helps

Re: 12,000km service
They don't stop within the first 2 years but I'd still keep it within warranty spec.
A relationship with a good shop is well worth establishing and not all mods void warranty anyway.

Re: 12,000km service
Just picked the bike up from the 12k service today. Best price I found was Revolution Motorcycle Suzuki/Yamaha World. They were fantastic even the loaner bike is a laugh (sport rider indian style yzf r15).

I was just quoted a special price by Peter Stevens for my 12K service, $445, when I said that I could get the book service done this moth at Victor Motorcycles for their spring special price, $250 they said the best they could do was $280 if I didn't get the plugs done, said I'd rather ride to Victor and save $200!
I cant believe $165 to lift the fuel tank off and change 4 plugs
Re: 12,000km service
I have been dealing with victor motorcycles since they opened over 25 years ago and would highly recomend them because i know most of the staff personally and know that they will treat my bikes as if it were there own (actually they probably treat them better than me! )
Plus its good ride if your coming from out of town.

Re: 12,000km service
They were also recommended to me by someone I know, and yes, the ride down will be a nice way to start the day (so long as the weather is good), might come back via either Delamere or Strath in the arvo
Re: 12,000km service
I had the 12000 service done in Victor Harbor yesterday. The trip down there saved me $195 on the Peter Stevens price and $165 on the next best price in Adelaide (Victor Motorcycles are doing a $250 fixed price spring special ATM). I rocked up as they were opening @ 9:00, they gave me a loaner to get around (I think I looked pretty funny on a 50cc step through but it was better than walking), 3 hours later picked the bike up and went home via Inman Valley, Yankalilla, Normanville, Carrickalinga, Myponga Reservoir, I was lucky to pick a nice day, The guts at Victor were great, I wouldn't hesitate to use them again
