Starter motor clunking when the air is cold.
This is a strange one to me.
When it is cold. Like 5am in the morning or 10pm at night my starter motor makes a clunking sound as it engages.
It does not do this if the engine is warm. Or of the air temp is warmish and it is day light.
The battery is fully charged.
Any ideas? Besides that my starter motor is on the way out maybe?

Probably stating the obvious , but I suppose you've checked all the connections & side stand / clutch switch ...........otherwise as Gus said may be the battery .............hopefully not the starter

Mine was worse at cold and it put more load on the starter. I can't remember if you have a 1250 or not but it sounds familiar
Do a search for "starter clunk" (search won't work on my tablet)
If you have a 1200 I'm not sure if its the same issue as the starter internals are different. But if its a 1250 its got about 500 starts left. Trust me

I have found this https://nswbandits.forumotion.net/t1600-starter-clunk?highlight=starter+clunk
It only clunks when the start button is depressed and it is one clunk. It does not do this when i release the button.
I will get the battery load tested first.

There have been issues with magnets coming unglued from the interior and buggering things up. Worth checking as they are expensive to replace

not sure , but are they the same starter motor in the 1200 as the 1250.........I seem to remember someone saying they were a different part number when 2WA was having trouble

Very different Paul. The 1250 is not interchangeable with anything else and very cheaply made inside compared to the 1200 starter.

Re: Starter motor clunking when the air is cold.
How about a loose negative battery terminal? I thought I would check the charge in the battery with a different battery charger I have. Putting the clip on the negative terminal and the bolt was loose.

Re: Starter motor clunking when the air is cold.
I have found the problem. Its the choke. If I have the choke on FULL when cold starting it is causing the "lock up" of the starter motor. If I go to FULL and then back it off just a touch. The Bike will then start with no problems.

Sounds like your timing could be slightly advanced and it firing to early before TDC

I did fit a holeshot 5 degree advancer and then this problem started.

Should be easy enough to check then

That'll be it. Fires too early and sounds like it fighting itself. Turf it and buy a TRE

Ok. Maybe.
I have asked Dale who made the 5 degree thingie I have fitted and he says it might be my starter clucth on the way out.
If I back the choke off just a tiny tad when cold it starts fine. I think I might try a tune up first.

Sorry Ross I forgot you had a 1200. The gsx750, 1000, Hayabusa. 1250 and I'm guessing 1200 Bandits all have the timing retarded in 1st to 5th gear. A TRE fixes the problem. I don't see how the 1200 would be any different.
