Post  Mpottsy Thu 16 Aug 2012, 1:47 pm

Picked up the new(ish) MRA screen this morning from Baz and got straight to work when I got home fitting and re mounting the GPS unit. I had been toying with the Idea of relocating the GPS mount for quite a while but never got around to it. A new bracket from Jonny Appleseed and I was ready to go. The GPS now sits very comfortably under the new MRA Screen just above the gauges and is much easier to glance at and see. Over all am very happy with the finished results.

Looks very neat indeed.

Does the new GPS bracket use the screen mounts ?

Any chance of a pic looking back at the front of the bike ?

Cheers,

The new bracket is actually bolted through the plastic cowling with a secondary plate underneath to prevent the cowling from breaking. It is held in place with 4 bolts and washers. I had to cut a small notch into the cowling for the cable to prevent it being damaged and to ensure that the front facia fitted correctly.

You don't find the Zumo is too far away ?

I don't think we (GSF1250's) have as much room above the instrument panel as the new models. I ended up putting on a RAM double knuckle so the GPS sits directly above the clutch reserviour, close to my left hand.

I don't remember seeing a secure mount on here before, this one is the V2 Touratech unit - Johnny Appleseed has it listed for $239. Sorry I haven't a picture of mine with the Zumo in place, the white card was my old parking permit, under it (hidden) is the normal black Garmin mount, and that sits on the Touratech. It is in the open mode, when secured the top come down to lock the unit in place. The mechanism wouldn't stop a persistent thief, but it is good enough for the keep it in place from the opportunist. In reality, I still take the Zumo off the bike when it is unattended, the mount was main bought to ensure the GPS doesn't fall off the bike, I have already lost one cover, it would be difficult to explain to the Ministry of Finance why I need another GPS. Here's a couple of shots from the Tourtech site:

Obviously you are not a GPS user Gus, otherwise you would know the bloody things have an onboard Sadistic Chip that will take you "down that road" to see how far you go before realizing it has sent you the wrong way confused

@Gus it's lucky I did not get a GPS from Korea as they do have a built in TV Laughing Laughing Laughing

@barry I did look at the touratech unit in the past but have found the Garmin bracket to be fine and like you I never leave the unit on the bike it is always the first thing I remove after I take of my helmet. The Zumo is now in a better position I feel as I am quite tall and when it was on the the handle bars I always had to look down. In its new location it is probably about 3 to 4 inches back. I am thinking I might even but a dark black out strip along the top insid ethe screen to reduce sun glare

Now you really would have thought that the word "island" would have given them a clue

I'm with Gus on this one.

There is absolutely no problem with getting lost providing you have sufficient fuel.
You also get to see new places and sometimes meet new people (a bit like alzheimers I guess Smile )
Also, a paper map will generally not lead you too far astray and leaves you in control, not some "talking tart" telling you to turn left 200 metres ahead when there is clearly not a road in site.

well...to each their own I guess,if it helps you..then good.

personally i cringe at having heated grips and a controller on my bike because it looks like to much crap on my bars, but i do have them, thats my absolute limit.

i put a map in my tank bag if i`m on a big journey to a place i`ve never been

No talking tart on mine, Homer tells me where to go and I find myself cracking up most of the time Smile
