Tablets Anyone ?
OK all you Geeks and Techno Heads out there. I am looking into purchasing a " Tablet ". No ! not one that will keep me awake for days and chase butterflies around the backyard. One of these new computer like gizmos that you can download MCN onto, store photos and things like that. I'm sure there are some of you out there that are up to date with these things, and I would like to hear your advise on selecting one. ( there are so bloody many to choose from ). One friend says i Pad. Another says NO i Pad cause they only support Apple stuff. ??? Have my eye on a Toshiba AT100. Comes with a 1TB portable HD. Please help.

Re: Tablets Anyone ?
I have the Acer Iconia A500 (32gb WiFi) The A501 is 3g and wasn’t available 12 months ago.
It’s a ripper that has many features you won’t find on an iPad such as;
• Micro SD slot
• HDMI port
• USB slot
It also runs Android so you’re not shackled to Apple/iTunes. It plays HD video and battery still lasts about 10hrs.
The only down side is its slightly thicker (2mm) and slightly heavier (about 30gm) than an iPad 2 and the charging cable is ridiculously short and you can’t charge via USB but a full charge from the wall only takes about an hour.
If I was seriously looking now and wanted the same features I would have a close look at the 10 inch Samsung machine.
To show I’m not biased Melody has a iPad 2 and it does what she wants it to do. I wanted something I could plug a thumb drive or ext HDD into.
So my question is what do you want this tablet to do? And don’t think any of them are a replacement for anything more than the most basic of lap tops.
Oh we run both of them off a Telstra portable WiFi hotspot when we’re out and about.

Cheers 2W. I basically want one for portable maps, photo and video storage, magazine downloading to read anywhere. And I guess other stuff will pop up when I start useing one. Looking at the Toshiba AT100 on youtube it seems to have a lot of things over the iPad. Good cameras, more slots, ie min usb, SD card and so on. I'm sure that it will be like most things. I will get one or another, and then I will see something else and wish that I had gotten that.

I cant see a USB port in the specs for that one and at 16mm thick its quite "chunky".
Specs Here. Reviews Here I opersonally think its slanted towards the iPad although the new one is very good. Trust me, you wont be using it (any tablet) for its camera capabilities.
Still if its what you want go for it. I use mine 95% of the time. My PC is only turned on for word processing and photo and video processing

Re: Tablets Anyone ?
I have a Motorola Xoom wifi only version. 16B plus expansion slot, so I have a 32gb tablet for much less than an Ipod or Samsung equivalent. Seeing as my phone allows me to set it up as a wifi hotspot, I can tether my tablet to it.
If AMCN made their digital prices a bit cheaper, I'd consider it. As it is, I used Xinio App (available for IOS and Andriod), picked up a 12 month subscription to an US motorcycle mag, can't recall the exact name, not a bad read.

Yes the phone WiFi is a good option but it kills the battery and data speed (Optus in our case) is much slower than the Telstra kit.

Re: Tablets Anyone ?
I too like mr 440, have the XOOM. I tether with my htc and like a device that's not fully locked down (each to their own of course, but very happy with the motorola). Like much other in the world of CE, depends on what you want to do, and, what you can be bothered doing. For me, Apple is too locked down, and i tend to be like Chris in using the tablet for most, excepting grunt work. If u look at android based stuff, look lots as you can have anything from honeycomb to ice cream sandwich, with a variety of hardware providers (apple and samsung are back in court in the u.s...)

Thanks Thof. I think the upgradeability of the Toshiba has won me over. 2 X USB, 1 X mini USB, 1 X HDMI. 1 x SD card slot. I cannot find another tablet with these. The only bad point I can see with it is the thickness of it. But that really doesn't bother me. Could be more solid that way.

They are well configured but from my playing at my local HN seem quite heavy. You have to hold these tablets they dont work well on your lap so make sure you can use it one handed. Also the screen quality/display on these doesnt seem as good as some of the others.Hammy wrote:Thanks Thof. Confusion. Yes I am seeing poor reports on the screen qaulity of the Toshiba. Did you see one in HN 2W ? Am now looking at the Acer A501. Mmmmmmmmm not bad.

I think I last played with one in JB HiFi. The screen was ok if viewed straight on but there was something about it that wasnt as good as mine or some others. The A501 is mine with 3g so should be as good if not better. Mine is over 12 months old and has been updated to the latest Honeycomb OS. Rear speakers are ordinary but headphones are great. Charging cable is very short and its a proprietry plug and I havent seen one on eBay. The cameras are crap. I have other options though. They have "gorilla glass" apparently very tough. I have a screen protector on as well and it lives in a wet suit type pouch.
PM if you have specific questions. If I had the same needs I would buy another.

Re: Tablets Anyone ?
Now i know TW is going to bag me but really the ipad is the way to go........ why
thousands more really cool apps
longer battery life
better screen
Itunes Eco system: the standard line i here now is " i dont like the restrictive way itunes makes you use there system only" well to date its the safest way to buy apps, Google Openess is fraught with danger, numerous apps have been removed due to Mal ware, non with IOS (apple) plus itunes makes it shit easy to down load and install.
Now Android is a very fragmented OS, samsung have there version, so does toshiba, Acer, Motorola. there is very little standardisation and if your tablet uses and older version then you apps might not work, but it will still let you down load it and pay for, with no recourse. you must remember android is free to OEMS
having sold tablets for 12 months i recommend the Apple ipad ( of course) then the Zoom, and then the Acer
hang on you say the Zoom, tosh and acer have a USB slot is it, why do you need that on a table, a tablet is a content viewer not a computer. I use drop it gives me 50 gigs in the cloud for files plus icloud for my photos and they work great and i can access any where i have the internet. a little thought out side the square and you will see what i mean and box works a treat i can access box from any device PC , mac, ipad, iphone, android, windows mobile 7 easy peasey.
oops oh no ive lost my memory stick, or ya wife washes it, the cloud is the go usb sticks are so naughties
If your an apple phobe but you want a tablet wait for mr softie to bring out his slate, i recon its OS is very good easy to use ,stable ,no compatibility issues
any way if any of you guys want some assistance with your device PM me and i'll try and help

James you must have missed my post where I said the new iPad was very good. I think in the same post I said we had an iPad and an Android tablet
They both have strengths but for mine the Acer still has the features I need. 10hr battery life and flash player still wins. Not to mention 2/3 price.I have never downloaded a rogue app but I guess if you d/l one claiming to link to free porn you could be asking for trouble.
Lucky one size doesent fit all.
sent from my android powered phone

I bought a Pendo pad for $60 with 12 months warranty. Initial review is pretty good except I can't do anything extraordinary with it yet until I get a micro sd card to run the bigger programs.

Got a Galxy Tab 2 (10.1) the new one, it is awesome... wouldn't touch ipad as it is too locked down to do what i need it, but that is development stuff. However the ipad also struggles to play the wide range of video formats that android can cope with

Its well with my Galaxy SII phone as well.
My understanding with the iPad and I could be wrong is that it does not support Flash Player which is why it struggles with video. I think the android market is getting there and its more than accepted in the world now.
The main reason I avoid Apple is the approach to marketing, the massive price and that they are a software company etc. Not many people know but Samsung actually make all the internal componantry and screens for the iPhone and iPad for Apple which is funny as hell.

well put rustic, though samsung don't make all of it, but most of it
Its not just flash, but wmv, flv, mkv all don't run on apple, at least they didn't last time i had to explain that to a user at work....

if you use the right app it will like VLC it will, it just won't play flash and now that Adobe has realised that flash is battery guzzling piece of crap the rest of the word can get on with the much more user friendly HTML 5

There are several all with limited usability. The popular ones are browser based but still dont play all flash content.
Our 2 tablets have very different youtube experiences. Android (Honeycombe) wins
