Screen question
I know the ideal place for the wind blast from a screen is over the top of you head .Thats just never going to happen with a small to medium screen .
So where is the second best place for it to "hit" you ?
Middle of the visor is noisy .
Under the chin is noisy .So where am trying to get it ?

Re: Screen question
THat s exactly where i had it with "the chopping board screen ".
Thats not going to give me much rain protection is it .
I cut it down 25mm (the new one )today but dont want to go too far .I guess i'm only going to be happy when i take it off .

Re: Screen question
My current screen (1250s) directs the air into my chest (I'm 6' 2"). When I replaced it with the Givi, the air hit me in the neck/face and the turbulence was uncomfortable so I sold it. I'm happy with the standard screen and wouldn't again replace it - to get the air to go over the helmet I'd be needing to mount an entrance way door on the front, not a chopping board! No thanks.

+1 from me although I seem to ride over the tank more than others from photos I've seen.Ewok1958 wrote:My current screen (1250s) directs the air into my chest (I'm 6' 2"). Re: Screen question
I ended up settling on the MRA Vario with the adjustable front wing. It stops the turblence but you loose with additional noise. You might be able to do the same thing Gus, have the smaller screen but with another wing on top to deflect the air over. If it is only for short/rainy trips the noise might not be a problem.

Re: Screen question
How about one of those little attachable deflectors on the screen. Who has them ? , and do they work ?

Re: Screen question
Why not a racing number plate ala 1960s etc as a screen.

This is a MRA X-creen Add-on Spoiler, recond if you replaced the mounting nut with a wing nut you could have it attached to a standard screen pretty quickly. Saw it in the Twisted Throttle catalog, bit pricey, but the idea looks pretty simple.

Re: Screen question
I've got the MRA Vario and despite what others have said of theirs, I find mine does very little compared to the standard screen. Maybe makes a bit more noise. Anyway, I've scored some free Perspex and I'm going to try making a larger curved deflector section to attach to the vario mounts. Bit of heating and molding here and there etc. The vario all comes apart easily with a torx #8 bit. With the adjustment, I'm hoping to be able to keep the laminar flow up and under the screen to push the outer air flow higher than an enclosed screen provides.
I've hopefully got a ZG touring screen on the way if all else fails but will give this a go in the meantime. If it works (or improves things a bit) I'll post some pics.

Re: Screen question
Well, I got a chance to make a larger upper screen for the MRA Vario this arvo. Its about 4" taller than the original and bugger me, works bloody well!!
It doesn't buffet and when at the highest setting deflects the air to the top of the helmet and its nice smooth air.
At lowest setting the blast is like the standard screen and still really smooth, great for cooling down when needed. Difference between highest and lowest is about 85mm and very different angle. I now prefer this set up to the Madstad I've got on the beemer, cos I can adjust on the move and the wind flow can be varied lots. I tried experimenting at around 120km/h by closing up the air gap (I spoke about in earlier post) using my hands (throttle locks are handy) and found it gave me the head wobbles and got noisier. So air gaps are good and I'm a happy camper. Cost me nothing except a couple of hours on a beautiful Sat arvo in Darwin Rural. Not hard to do at all.
Original versus my custom job.
Screen at max height / angle
Screen at minimum height / angle

Re: Screen question
That my friend is a top job .I do have to laugh (at myself ) though .I've spent the last 2 days making my screen SMALLER trying to get it right .
Ive cut mine down 3 times .
How did you bend the perspex ,heat wise ? Flame thrower or battery powered candle ?

Re: Screen question
Cheers, Gus. Yeah I'm real happy the way it turned out. A jig saw, a 44 Gallon drum (provides just about the perfect curve template) a bit of baking paper to stop scratching when heating ,and an electric heat gun wielded by the fairer one.
I had a/market screen on an Aprilia Pegaso I had some years back - screen was TALL. Went through the same exercise you are, cut it back about 3 times then ended up put the original back on.
I'm now a fan of "air gaps" .

Electric heat gun. Bit of baking paper on a steel 44 gallon drum on its side, Margie in charge of the hot bit while I applied gentle pressure to each side of the screen to gently wrap it down (with welding gloves on cos she seemed to get me a bit... ), took about 15 minutes of trial and error to get a reasonably good shape. If you're going to give it a go - most picture framing shops have perspex off cuts. Thats where I got mine from - nil cost. Stuff I used is only 3mm but works well and doesn't get the flexies at speed.
