One Arm Rider Empty One Arm Rider

Post  madmax Fri 27 Jan 2012, 9:20 am

Yesterday, while fuelling the car up in Bairnsdale. We saw a guy on a old Moto Guzzi filling up at the same servo. The thing was this guy had only half a right arm, which got the discussion going how do you ride a bike with only one arm? Now I know we all ride with only one hand on the handle bars at times, but we pick our moments. I can't see this guy effectively handling the bike through some tight twisties.

We watched him leave, I'm guessing the bike is automatic? It still has a front brake lever on the right but the throttle is now on the left. So I'm guessing again that the brakes have been combined to the rear brake.

Anyway I think its great that he doesn't see his disability as a disability and is out enjoying himself.

If he was born like it he probably doesn`t think anything of it / my son had a mate with one arm ( thalidomide ) and he played basket ball , played drums & anything else he wanted to do . He didn`t have the mental block to his disability ? everyone else thought he should have Very Happy

I would imagine the scrutiny he would have had to go through to get his license with only one arm would have been pretty high.

No I didn't, I was sitting in the car waiting to move up to the pumps.

All I could tell was the front brake lever was still there, and as he left he was twisting the left hand grip

I may be wrong but I think Guzzys have linked brakes .

This was an older model, don't know for sure but by the styling it looked mid to late 80s maybe early 90s. Wish I'd taken a sly photo

I thought linked brakes were usually linked to the front brake lever, but that is why I'm guessing that his bike must be linked to the foot brake, can't see any other way of doing it.

He probably would be quite happy to show you if you see him again / used to be a guy here with one arm he was unable to use even though he still had it of sorts , but he had modified his bike ( could ride with the best of them as well )

That's amazing, what was it he said about the front brake? Was it a hydraulic clutch that is now connected to the front brake?

That'll be because there are no brake master cylinders for the left side, as long as the piston is about the same, no problem.

I used to see a one legged fellow in Canberra getting about on a XR600. Quite a high bike for someone with two legs. He would change gear via a length of electrical conduit duct taped to the gear lever and ending about level with the top of the tank. Can do will do.

Post  Bhoffo Tue 06 Mar 2012, 8:35 pm

Just last night there was a show called "Temporary Australians" on TVS (Sydney)... a show about Motor Cycles and their riders etc etc...
There was a bit on there about a one armed guy - riding a green bike (don't remember the brand now) - he apparently lost his right arm when side-swiped by a 4WD...

On the show he said (nickname 'No Brakes) that he had been an engineer and worked out how to adapt his bike so he could ride it single (left) handed.

He's put the front brake lever and clutch lever both onto the left side, as well as the throttle and all the other button/controls.

Reckons he rides all the time with it - on dirt when he has to and all around Australia. When I was down at the WSBK's a couple of weeks ago I'm pretty sure I saw him roll up there - certainly was a guy with only one arm... Shocked

I played (Aussie Rules) full back on a bloke with his hand missing at his wrist. I was a 1/4 way though the game before I noticed. He is a top lad, a good footballer and he's mates tell me a awesome motorbike. He rides a TT600 around the Station he runs. popes wheelies every where.

I can tell you wrestling for position with old mate and getting with his stump hurts.

Farken Hell!!

I'm not sure which is more impressive, the fact he is passing other riders, or than he is really getting his 'knee down' (no pun intended)....

Just unbelievably incredible.
