Many years ago in NZ, the Transport Ministry used a fixed wing aircraft to measure travel speeds between two fixed points on SH1 and would radio through the speed to cars on the ground. Effective, but expensive, and never got off the ground (pun intended)

Years ago there was talk that they could track you from the air across the Hay plains but I suspect it was only a scare tactic to get drivers ( riders......he he Embarassed ) to slow down .

The sheer cost of doing it put NZ off. Police in NZ don't receive fine revenue, so it makes no sense to use expensive tactics

The Princes Hwy between Traralgon & Rosedale (25km) is patrolled regularly by chopper. White marks across the hwy at several locations and signage installed and convenient parking and towing points at each end see this as a good earner for the state!

There is a story about the WA police using aircraft to check speed on the long straights, they had white mile markers painted across the road - simple matter of watching a car cross one marker and then time it to the next, get there too soon and you were speeding.

The local lads after being pinged supposedly got out their black paint one night and painted out every second white strip. There are still a couple of coppers in Kalgoorlie wondering why all the local lads were clocked at driving at 60kph in the 100 zones.

So the question is, Gus where were you in the early 80's ?

just got back from visiting NSW and Vic - how do you southern riders get around the "average speed cameras" I had heard of them but never seen them before. Would they be the same as the other methods previous mentioned just more technical?

Lucky for me I was in my toyo and towing me camper so never got above 105.

I am very envious of the highways down there compared to our goat tracks in QLD.

Not exceeding the limit usually fools the point to point tax collectors
